getting to know our sponsored charity: Woods Homes December 15 2009, written by Jomar.
Woods Home started as an orphanage in 1914, and has evolved to become a nationally credited children’s mental health organization with centres in Calgary, Strathmore, Canmore, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, and Fort Smith.
In Calgary, they have 8 residential programs: EXIT Youth Shelter and Exit Community Outreach, Eastside Family Centre, Community Resource Team, Stabilization, Foster care, as well as Specialized Learning Centres in various schools.
Woods Homes is the last stop for many kids. They have experienced violence, addictions, abuse. They are working on tough issues at home and at school.
More often than not, the families do not have the resources to provide their children with what we’ve come to believe as a traditional Christmas.
Woods Homes helps over 450 youth and their families per day.

Unplugged and Unwrapped – Gift Donation Suggestions December 15 2009, written by Jomar.
We have a few suggestions for those struggling to find gifts for our Unplugged and Unwrapped Christmas Charity Toy Drive.
The greatest number of kids we’re helping fall between the ages of 6-14 years.
Toys are always a great idea. It’s hard to go wrong with sports equipment for boys. Cars, action figures, and electronics do just well. Popular kids books nurture their reading as well as comics and age appropriate “how-to” books. Clothing items, especially winter accessories are always needed. Don’t forget you can always give them the power of choice with a gift card.
Stuffed animals are always high on lists for girls. DVDs of popular cartoons and youth shows from Nikelodeon, Family Channel, and Disney give something that can be shared. Also think about art supplies: crayons, felts, paints. Finally, cosmetics are a great fit.
Each and every gift that we receive to bring over to our needy kids at Woods Homes is invaluable.
